Welcome to the Central Texas Chapter (CenTex) of Loners on Wheels. Our chapter was founded in April 1990 with 23 members. All long-time members have lots of stories about campouts and harrowing experiences.
The CenTex chapter has campouts every month except November (due to several year-end holidays). In this “off” months, there usually are caravans led by various members to such places as Colorado, Big Bend National Park, Louisiana and New Mexico.
In Central Texas there are many lovely campgrounds, most of which also host Winter Texans. Many of the campgrounds are on riverbanks. The CenTex area generally extends to about 100 miles from the Austin-San Antonio hubs, to keep fuel costs down, but sometimes extends farther.
A typical schedule includes a Thursday-night potluck, dinner out on Friday evening and Thursday’s leftovers on Saturday night. A host/hostess checks out places to visit, local restaurants and other things of interest to present to the members. These have included a tour of the Blue Bell Creamery in Brenham, wildflower trails in the Highland Lakes area, the LBJ Ranch near Stonewall, little theater in Lockhart and the original Dr Pepper plant in Waco. Many members spend afternoons shopping and exploring the area near the RV parks. There are usually table games each evening and sometimes dancing, either with a karaoke machine or at a local hall. Each year we select a Camper of the Year and present a certificate of award at our December campout.
The 2016 CenTex President is Janie Cummings, who has served faithfully for several years in several capacities, along with Donette Harpole (our gracious Vice-President), Ruth Stehling (our faithful Treasurer), Mikail Davenport (our Secretary and Webmaster), Val White (our cheerful Contact Person, and Bruce Woodall (our very capable Wagon Master). They all do an outstanding job.
The club always welcomes visitors with famous Texas hospitality, so come to visit whenever you are in Central Texas.
